Vonnegut carried around a calculator
Trying to remember the sum
He’d yet to imagine for a fictional fortune.

He hashed it out in a notebook until it seemed real.

When the notebook was full he set it on fire
And kept the figure on his typewriter,
Finding it too mechanical and he sat down
To memorize it but ended up with a novel.
